Plans for a New Power Plant in Palmer AK Announced

Last month, plans for a new power plant in Palmer AK were announced.  This private power plant will be near the Beluga coal fields and CIRI will be using underground coal gasification technology at this location.  Also in the works are Matanuska Electric Association’s (MEA) own plans for power generation in the form of a 180-megawatt plant which will use natural gas.  According to a recent report in the Frontiersman, CIRI is already working on obtaining permits and could begin work on the power plant’s construction as early as 2014.  MEA representatives have indicated that their plans will not be affected by CIRI as their current Chugach Electric Association contract expires at the end of 2014 and by this time MEA will be looking into the possibility of power purchase agreements with CIRI.
