trophyAlaskan athletes are in the news again with some notable achievements!  Congratulations are in order for Kikkan Randall and Sean Rash, both professional athletes originally from Alaska.

This week on Tuesday, April 17th, was Kikkan Randall’s homecoming celebration.  Randall is the World Cup overall sprint champion and hundreds of people came out to celebrate and meet the three-time Olympian.  The homecoming was at Kincaid Park where folks could get their pictures taken with Randall and her Joska Crystal Globe trophy that she won this ski season.

Also notable was Sean Rash’s 239-205 victory over Ryan Ciminelli which placed him at the top of the Professional Bowlers Association league’s money-earnings and points list for the season.  Sean Rash, 29, of Anchorage AK leads the prize-money list with $140,250, the points list with 201,293, and has the season’s best average at 228.19.  Rash is also a contender for the Player of the Year award.

The Great Alaska Seafood Cook Off adds Amateur Recipe Contest

recipesIn preparation for the Great Alaska Seafood Cook off event this year, the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute is looking for your best recipe.  The Institute has added a new amateur recipe contest and the top 20 recipe writers selected will be invited to the event.  This seafood cook off event has a long history in Alaska where great seafood is natural and hugely popular, and talented professional chefs compete for the top spot with fabulous unique and creative dishes.  Although the professional category is now closed, amateur recipes can be submitted until May 1st.  The top winner of the amateur recipe category will receive a prize package including a new iPad and be ‘crowned’ along with the new king or queen of the cook off at the event itself.  So mark your calendars for the Great Alaska Seafood Cook Off on May 14 from 6-9 p.m. at the Bill Sheffield Alaska Railroad Depot in Anchorage AK.

Mat-Su Valley AK Activities and Events this month

kayakingMat-Su Valley AK offers great activities and events this April.  From kayaking classes to home shows, there is sure to be something that you will want to mark your calendar for!

Basic Kayak Class will be held at the Wasilla Pool from Monday April 16-23 and Wednesday April 25.  Classes run from 8:00-9:30 p.m. and participants must be 10 or older and be able to swim.  Students will learn strokes, wet exits, rescues, braces, and Eskimo rolls.  Pre-register by calling or emailing Mat-Su Borough Recreation Services Community Enrichment Program; the fee is $80 for three 1.5 hour classes.

Hawk Watching will be April 14-15 hosted by Anchorage Audubon and Mat-Su Birders.  This event will be held east of Palmer and a BBQ grill and potluck picnic is planned for April 15.

A class will be taught by instructors Valerie Barber and Julie Cascio on how to tap birch trees for sap to make syrup.  It will be held at the Palmer Center for Sustainable Living from 1 to 3 p.m. on April 21st.

The Mat-Su Home Show will be from April 27-29.  This is the 32nd annual home show sponsored by Mat-Su Home Builders Association and held at the Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Center in Wasilla AK.

  • Obtain written estimates from at least three different moving companies as this will help you decide on the lowest price for your move.  Although you can get price quotes over the phone or on the internet, these quotes may not take in consideration other unexpected factors.  In-home estimates are the best route if you don’t want to be surprised by the actual pricing after you’ve already started your move.
  • Avoid companies that ask for large down payments to hold dates as they may not be trustworthy.
  • Take all valuables with you such as jewelry, cash, coins, and important papers.  You do not want these to get lost during the move, and some valuables can easily be shipped to your new location ahead of time via the mail.

Senate Capital Budget at $2.6 billion includes funds for construction projects in Anchorage AK

financeThe Senate reported its $2.6 capital budget recently, with more than $380 million towards projects for the Anchorage AK area; none of these earmarked funds, however, are for the Knik Arm bridge project and only a portion of the desired amount for Anchorage port construction.  In addition to the capital budget, it was agreed upon by the house, senate, and governor’s office that there would be a bond package for another $450 million for transportation projects with spending contingent on voter approval.  The Anchorage port project was looking for $350 million this year, but was allotted $25 million in the Senate’s capital budget with another $50 million earmarked in the bond package.  Other funding will go to the construction of engineering buildings for both the Anchorage and Fairbanks campuses of the University of Alaska.  The proposed budget is expected to pass the Senate early this week and then be transmitted to the House.

TransCanada Requests Change in Pipeline Project for AK

toolsA decision may be made this week by the state of Alaska regarding whether to give TransCanada Corp. permission to shift its attention to a building liquefied natural gas pipeline, according to a recent article on adn.com.  TransCanada has asked Natural Resources and Revenue to focus on a liquefied natural gas project instead of the initial plan to work on a gas line that would run from Alaska’s North Slope into Alberta Canada; this liquefied natural gas pipeline would be expected to be capable of facilitating overseas exports.  TransCanada believes that under the terms of the Alaska Gasline Inducement Act, they should be able to change their plans due to unforeseen factors at the time of licensing, but this change must be approved by the commissioners.  Joe Balash, Deputy Natural Resources Commissioner reported his opinion that a great deal of the work that has been done on the Alberta line, particularly in the northern stretch, can be transferable to a liquefied natural gas project.

Anchorage AK’s Annual Spring Garden Show this Saturday

tulipsThe Annual Spring Garden Show in Anchorage AK is scheduled for this Saturday.  A wonderful annual event, the Spring Garden Show brings an array of local products that are sure to delight both visitors and residents alike.  The show will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Mall at Sears in Anchorage AK and will include additional vendors besides the usual popular Center Market sellers.  Featured items will be, of course, lovely garden orchids, African violets, marigolds, bonsai and other great plants and flowers; for those that would like to get into gardening, there will be information available for them to get started on a fun and rewarding hobby.  Also available at the Spring Garden Show will be fresh, locally grown vegetables, Alaskan fresh seafood, and Matanuska Creamery products.  Fire Island Rustic Bakeshop, a local business, will be bringing back their hit “free-range Peeps” this year which are a fun twist on an old Easter classic made from organic ingredients.

Time to register for Palmer AK’s 2012 3rd Annual Golf Tournament

golfThe 3rd Annual Golf Tournament in Palmer AK is scheduled for this summer, but participants can register now for this fantastic community event.  The Palmer Golf Course will be holding its annual Golf Tournament on July 13 starting around 2:00 p.m. with a Steak Barbecue immediately following the tournament.  Golfers can enter for $120 per person and as this is a ‘best-ball tournament’ official rules will be forwarded to you after you have registered.  For those that would like a dinner only reservation these are also available for just $45 per person.  Whether you are looking to enter or sponsor, forms can be found at palmerchamber.org.  This has been a well-attended event the past few years and a great reason to look forward to the summer.
