The Palmer City Council approved plans for spending more than $800,000 on improvements to the ice arena in a meeting last month. The need for these improvements arose from The North American Hockey League’s Avalanche club requesting to move to the City of Palmer from their former location in Wasilla, AK. Facility requirements for the league include upgrading the arena’s seating to accommodate a minimum of 1,500 people, new lighting and speaker system, added locker rooms, office space, restrooms, and 20-feet more room on the west side of the arena. With all of these and other improvements done, the city will be entering into a five year contract with the Avalanche team; the 27 home games scheduled per season will generate more sales tax revenue due to ticket, and food and beverage sales, thus boosting the local economy.
