Enstar, a natural gas provider in Anchorage AK, has joined with other local utilities to build a new gas storage facility. This new facility is expected to cost an estimated $180 million and will help keep heat on in homes during those cold winter days. The design plan for the facility includes drilling five wells into a mostly depleted gas reservoir where excess gas will be pumped into during warm months when supply is strong; this basin will then hold the gas for winter when demand peaks and supply is generally short. It is expected that this new facility will allow Southcentral Alaska to avoid any energy emergencies. Plans to start building are scheduled for next month.
