The Mat-Su Valley snowmachine group are planning on making their debut this week in Wasilla AK.    The Mat-Su Vintage Snowmachine Racers Club will be debuting at Rumrunners at Mat-Su Resort in Wasilla on Saturday as the first of two scheduled dates; in mid-February the club will meet again at Rumrunners.  The club is affiliated with the Big Lake Aurora Lions Club and though they typically host their season series at the Houston Lodge in Houston, this year they will be trying something new to increase their exposure in the Wasilla area.

This Saturday the event starts at noon and the awards ceremony will be scheduled for 4 p.m.  Participants must be a Lions Club member and sign up from 10 to 11:30 a.m. as well as attend a racer meeting at 11:50 a.m. before the races.

The second annual Santa Cop and Heroes Barn Dance is scheduled for Friday, Dec 3rd.  This event will take place at the Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Center in Wasilla AK starting at 6 in the evening.  The Santa Cop and Heroes program has been doing well in the Valley for seven years now and began as an idea to allow the public to see police officers in a more positive light.  Santa cop volunteers (which now include medics and firefighters as well as police officers) take presents and food to the Valley’s elderly residents who are often neglected at this time a year and who really enjoy the company and attention.

The barn dance will have door prizes every half hour and is an adults only activity as beer and wine will be served with refreshments. Funds raised will benefit the Santa Cop and Heroes senior outreach program to brighten someone’s holiday season.  Tickets are $15 per person or $25 per couple.

Last week Alaska’s delegation to U.S. Congress announced that $1.06 million in Federal Aviation Administration money has been marked to go to the airport project in Wasilla with the possibility of $3 million more.  According to Wasilla Public Works Director, Archie Giddings, this money may go to expanding the apron at the airport, and Bristol Construction has already been chosen to do the work in adding more tie-downs to meet increasing demands.  Another addition to the airport and the Wasilla area that has been discussed for some time is a possible road between the airport and the city’s sports complex.  The new road would make it easier for emergency supplies to be dropped off and transported to the sports center in the event of a disaster where emergency response can be coordinated for the city.

The new planned primary care center for Alaska Native and American Indian people in Mat-Su Valley had its ground-breaking ceremony last Tuesday.  This project involves the support of the Southcentral Foundation, the Knik and Chickaloon tribes, Indian Health Services, and the U.S.D.A rural development.  The new facility will be located in Wasilla AK and will be about 90,000 sq ft to house health care including primary care, dental, behavioral health, optometry, health education and wellness.  After many years of planning and preparation, the new center is expected to be completed by September 2012 and provide more than 200 full-time jobs.

In recent Wasilla AK news, Mayor Verne Rupright has expressed plans for growth in the area.  Mayor Rupright reported that Wasilla remains financially strong and he would like to make the city more business-friendly for existing businesses and those hoping to start up or branch out in the city.  At a recent Wasilla Chamber of Commerce meeting, Mayor Rupright impressed that buying local is very important in this plan for growth, and he would also like to see downtown Wasilla resemble the buyer-friendly look of older cities, with several anchor buildings surrounded by smaller streets lined with local shops.

Due to a better than expected performance of Wasilla sales tax, the city is lowering the rate sooner than was planned.  Back in 2001, the city council increased the sales tax to fund the purchase and construction of the Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Center, raising it from 2 percent to 2.5 percent.  This ordinance gave Wasilla until April of 2011 to repay the debt, but because city revenue has exceeded expectations, the sales tax rate will be reduced by half a percent starting July 1st, adjusting back to 2 percent.

The Wasilla Airport has secured a grant from the Federal Aviation Administration that will expand the airport, as reported by the Frontiersman last week. The $1.35 million grant will be used to expand the airport’s apron–the paved area off the runway.  Currently the airport’s apron is hindering further growth of the facilities as the waiting list for airplane tie-downs as well as the amount of space that can be leased to commercial operations is thus limited.  Wasilla Public Works Director, Archie Giddings, believes that future expansion of the runway and an access road are great possibilities as the current improvements will produce a dirt fill that would pave the way to these other projects.

The city of Wasilla AK also has a new airport master plan in the works that is expected to be reviewed near the end of this year.
